Excellent academy. Head instructor Chief Rick Whitehead is an extremely qualified instructor - a retired Chicago police officer and multiple time world champion in Tae Kwon Do.
My son has be doing martial arts since he turned 3 with Whitehead's Martial Arts. Great people, great education and fun!
Chief Master Rick Whitehead has over 40 years experience in teaching ATA Taekwondo; he is an expert in his art.
I have been Chief Rick's student for 32 years. I started in his program at Northwestern University in 1992 and earned my first degree black belt there. During COVID I was able to reconnect with Chief Rick after a long hiatus from ATA Taekwondo. He encouraged me and my 2 boys to start remotely in 2020.
Your first Krav Maga class at Whitehead's Martial Arts
Nervous about walking into a Krav Maga school for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good instructors expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling a few core techniques with a partner — controlled and at your own pace, not hard sparring. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: comfortable athletic clothes you can move in — there's no uniform or special gear you need to buy to get started. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — most schools have everything else you'll need for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call what to bring. Pressure-testing eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid — you won't be sparring hard on day one. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign in and meet the instructor. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
